Avoid deadly accidents by checking your tire pressure

Car accidents are never expected, but there are certain things that Los Angeles drivers can do to help avoid them. One of the simplest things that can help avoid car accidents is to regularly check your tire pressure. Indeed, when tires are properly inflated, vehicles grip the road better, stop faster and are more agile and capable of avoiding different obstacles on the road.

It is natural for your vehicle tires to lose their air pressure over time. For this reason, you have to regularly check your tires to ensure they are properly inflated. The best way to do that is with a tire pressure gauge, which can be bought at any Los Angeles auto supply shop.

Every car tire has its own tire pressure pounds per square inch or "PSI" that it needs to be inflated to. Check with your car dealer, tire service shop or vehicle owners' manual to know your vehicles unique PSI requirements. Also, always check your tires when they are cold -- or when the car has not been driven for three hours -- in order to receive the most accurate reading.

After checking the tire pressure, write down the pressure of each tire. If it's too high, press the tire valve to release a little bit of air and then check the pressure again until it is correct. If it's too low, go to a service station and use the air pump to inflate your tire until it has reached the proper pressure. There should be a pressure gauge on the pump to help you. Be careful not to over-inflate your tires.

Having the correct amount of pressure in your tires is important for avoiding car accidents. However, correct tire pressure will not guarantee that you will avoid a crash -- especially if you are sharing the roadway with a drunk, unlawful or negligent driver. For California residents who get hurt in a crash that happens as the result of another driver's negligence or unlawful behavior, the injured person may be able to seek financial restitution from the at-fault driver in court.
