Rookie police officer seriously injured in motorcycle crash

On Behalf of | Sep 2, 2016 | Motorcycle Accidents |

Motorcyclists often take the brunt of the injuries when they’re involved in a collision with a car or larger vehicle. A 24-year-old rookie Los Angeles Police Department officer suffered serious leg and head injuries after being struck by an SUV last month.

The collision occurred just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 22. The off-duty officer was riding his motorcycle on Commonwealth Avenue in Fullerton when he was struck by a 19-year-old woman driving a Toyota Sequoia. She was reportedly in the process of turning left onto Basque Avenue when she collided with the motorcyclist.

The driver of the SUV, who was not injured, remained at the scene and has cooperated with law enforcement. She was reportedly seen sitting on the side of the road crying as first responders attended to the injured motorcyclist. Investigators are saying that it didn’t appear that she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It’s not been reported whether she was determined to be at fault in the crash. Police are asking for witnesses to come forward with any information they have.

The young man, who works at the LAPD’s Wilshire station, has been on the force for less than a year. He was transported to the UCI Medical Center. He may require amputation of his leg, according to a spokesman for the LAPD. He is expected to face a long recovery period.

Even those fortunate enough to live through motorcycle accidents can find their lives changed forever. Many victims face months and even years of medical care, physical therapy and other treatment. Some are no longer able to pursue the career of their dreams. If another motorist was at fault for the crash, it’s wise to seek legal guidance regarding taking civil action to help recover compensation to minimize the financial fallout to you and your family.
