Pedestrian accidents can only be reduced with a joint effort

Pedestrians aren't any match for motor vehicles. Cars and trucks are heavy vehicles that can seriously injure or kill a person because there is no protection against the impact. It is up to pedestrians, motorists and legislators to all do their part to keep pedestrians safe while they traverse cities across the country.

It is estimated that one pedestrian will be injured in an accident every eight minutes. That is a shocking frequency that shows how important it is for pedestrian safety to be made a priority.

Another estimate says that a pedestrian will die in an accident every two hours. Of these pedestrian deaths, 73 percent occur in urban environments. Many of them involve alcohol. Around 70 percent occur at night. A whopping 70 percent occur away from an intersection.

Sadly, even when they use a crosswalk, pedestrians aren't likely to feel safe. Around 60 percent of pedestrians said that they expect drivers to stop at the crosswalk. That means that 40 percent of pedestrians don't believe that drivers will follow the law around crosswalks, which are one place where pedestrians have the right of way.

Distractions, such as cell phones, are a common factor in pedestrian accidents. It is important that motorists and pedestrians take the time to focus on the driving or walking so that they don't get into an accident.

If you were struck by a vehicle, you do have rights. You can choose to seek compensation for your medical bills and other treatment that you have received because of the accident. Learning about the process can help you move forward.
