What safety measures are helpful for running at night?

Many Southern California residents lead active lifestyles. They participate in all manner of sports including running. Of course, running is best done in a park or on a track during daylight hours. Sometimes, the only way a runner may be able to get a workout is to hit the neighborhood roads in the evening.

While running at night can prove convenient, it also has its dangers. For one thing, far too many motorists drive in a hurry or while distracted. As such, there is a chance that a driver may not see a runner who is crossing the street or on the side of the road until it is too late.

Runners can take measures to help ensure they catch the eyes of nighttime drivers.  Here are some of the measures you can take to make your evening runs safer:

  • Wear brightly colored clothing as well as lights and reflectors.
  • Choose a route that is well lit.
  • Run in the opposite direction of traffic flow. By doing this, you can see the traffic coming, making it easier get out of the way if necessary.
  • Leave the headphones at home. When running at night, you need to be able to hear such cues as car horns or engines, which will be blocked out if you are listening to music.

It is also a very good idea to carry some form of identification. If the unfortunate happens and you are in an accident, emergency services can use the information on your ID to get in touch with your family. Your family can then relay important information about such things as your blood type or any preexisting conditions you may have.

Even if you are strong and in terrific shape, you can be severely injured if struck by a moving automobile.  If such an incident was caused by a reckless or distracted driver, then he or she should be held accountable. A California personal injury attorney may be able to help you build a case in an effort to get you the compensation you need for your medical expenses and recovery.
